Moving Timeline

✅ 3 Months Before Your Move

  1. Declutter your home: donate, sell, or discard anything you don’t want to bring.

  2. Create detailed packing lists by room or category.

  3. Set up a central folder (physical or digital) for all move-related documents.

  4. Research your new area (neighborhoods, transportation, amenities).

  5. Begin looking for new doctors, dentists, and schools if needed.

  6. Make a list of paperwork you’ll need (change of address, utilities, licenses, etc.).

✅ 2 Months Before Your Move

  1. Finish purging items you won’t be taking.

  2. Finalize your moving plan (DIY, professional movers, pods, etc.).

  3. Confirm and sign contracts with movers, landlords, storage companies, etc.

  4. Start a group text or shared calendar with anyone helping with your move. Share key dates, times, and responsibilities.

✅ 1 Month Before Your Move

  1. Reserve a storage unit if needed.

  2. Gather packing supplies (boxes, tape, labels, padding).

  3. Begin packing non-essential items.

  4. Start a box inventory: number each box, label contents and destination room, mark fragile items and “this side up.” Update your list daily.

✅ 2 Weeks Before Your Move

  1. Continue packing non-essentials.

  2. Keep updating your inventory.

  3. Seal and stack as many packed boxes as possible.

  4. Transfer medical, school, or vet records.

  5. Get your vehicle(s) serviced if moving long-distance.

  6. Refill prescriptions needed during and after the move.

  7. Notify service providers, government agencies, and billing accounts of your new address.

  8. Confirm travel plans for pets and family members.

  9. Plan meals to use up perishable food.

✅ 1 Week Before Your Move

  1. Fill empty space in boxes with towels, blankets, or packing paper and seal them.

  2. Pack “open first” boxes for kitchen and bathroom essentials but leave them unsealed.

  3. Pack dishes and glassware; switch to paper/plastic for final meals.

  4. Pack a suitcase for each household member with enough clothing and personal items for a few days.

  5. Ask for help from friends/family/move coordinators if needed.

  6. Pack an essentials box for your first night in the new home (toiletries, chargers, bedding, etc.).

  7. Drain gas/oil from lawn equipment and small engines.

  8. Empty, defrost, and clean refrigerator and freezer 48 hours before moving.

🚚 Moving Day

  1. Be present to oversee the process and answer questions.

  2. Walk through the inventory with movers, noting the condition of items.

  3. Read and understand all paperwork before signing.

  4. Double-check every room, closet, and storage space before the truck leaves.

  5. Share your contact info and confirm the delivery address with the movers.

📦 Delivery Day (If Different From Moving Day)

  1. Be on-site to direct and answer questions.

  2. Guide movers to place boxes in the correct rooms.

  3. Use your inventory list to check off each item as it arrives.

  4. If anything is missing or damaged, note it on the inventory sheet before signing or paying.
